Graveside services will be held Friday Nov. 13, 10:30 am at the West Side District Cemetery, Taft for Edna "Dude" Cantrell. She passed away November 6, 2015 in San Luis Obispo, CA. Born January 22, 1922 in Wetumka, Oklahoma, she grew up in the Great Depression- Dust Bowl era. Her family subsisted by growing their own fruits and vegetables, raising poultry and livestock. At age 15 she married her lifelong partner Leonard Cantrell. They settled first in Oakland CA, 1940 to work in the military shipyards. Edna operated a rivet gun assembling vessels. She was also employed at the Mt. Diablo Riding Academy, sometimes competing in the English Three-Gated Class. In the late 40's they moved to Maricopa. The couple raised four boys, Charles, Gary, Roger and Robert. While Leonard was in Maintenance at Maricopa Schools, Edna supervised the Desert Palm Shirt Corporation in Downtown Taft. Edna was the ultimate sports mom as all the Cantrell boys competed in anything athletic, most notably baseball. Both Leonard and Edna spent many years volunteering numerous hours to the Westside Little League program. In 1979, Edna and Leonard retired; moving to a new, modern farm house on the outskirts of Bakersfield. Here they were able to return to their roots with small scale livestock and a huge garden. Edna had her own sewing room and she excelled at crocheting, making quilts, canning fruits, vegetables and baking. Leonard passed away in 1989; but, Edna was able to maintain the property until she moved to Arroyo Grande with son Robert and his wife Sue in 2006. She was also preceded in death by sons Gary, Roger, a daughter Joann who succumbed to pneumonia at 30 months of age and grandson Bart. She is survived by sons Charles, and Robert, her daughter-in-law Sue, grandchildren Darin, Jason, Dustin, and Matthew. She had five great grandchildren Blake, Parker, Abby, Jackson and Romy. Following the service, a reception will be held at OT's Steakhouse, Taft.
